Certainly on a smaller scale than Tool, a community of amateurs hoped without too much believing in it the return of the Norwegian band Conception. The good news came in the form of a short three-track EP revealed a few days before the release of "My Dark Symphony", twenty-one years after the excellent "Flow". More than two decades after their last misdeed, the Norwegians are back with their formation intact but without a keyboardist.

After a short epic and punchy introduction, it's 'Great Again' that opens the EP in a heavy style typical of the Scandinavian style, with strong keyboards, very expressive drums, a bit like Tore Østby's former sidekick in Ark John Macaluso, and irresistible melodies. Tore Østby's divine touch already works miracles in a touching solo and Roy Khan remains true to what we've always heard from him in terms of depth of emotion and perfectly distilled power. The 2018 Conception is the perfect heir to the 1997 one and its particularly accessible "Flow". The next track 'Into The Wild' could even have appeared on it as it has the codes, the popish tonalities and the melodic quality.

After a direct but no less endearing 'Quite Alright', carried entirely by the singing of a Khan in excellent condition, comes 'The Moment' with the introduction of a rather dark jazzy piano that will develop in a rather surprising way and in any case in a more progressive register than the hitherto presented tracks. Indeed, after a verse a little in restraint supported by a drum set decidedly very lively, a unifying chorus emerges to give a rather original dimension to the title. The title will take an even different turn with an instrumental finale with palpable tension. The conclusion with 'My Dark Symphony' has been particularly taken care of by the Norwegians on the occasion of a heart-rending orchestral ballad full of sensitivity and melancholy whose soft melodies will remain in the mind for a long time.

The return of Conception, although it's done through a short EP, doesn't disappoint and on the contrary reassures on the preserved talent of the Norwegians. Tore and his companions have kept their inspiration intact and have somehow synthesized a large part of their writing in this record which, we hope, will inaugurate a new cycle of albums.
