Four years after a "Shout!" which, it must be admitted, had somewhat disappointed, the legend of US heavy blues-rock is back with an opus entitled "Revolution Come... Revolution Go" recorded the day after the election of Donald Trump at the head of the United States, a man of whom Warren Haynes is an outspoken opponent.

From the cover, the colour is announced with this man mounted upside down on his mount and shouting into his megaphone without anyone hearing him. Without making an openly committed opus, Gov't Mule is not going to hesitate to position himself on some societal subjects. This view on society and its demands will be found in tracks such as the powerful and catchy 'Stone Cold Rage', the melancholic mid-tempo ballad 'Pressure Under Fire' or the scathing bluesy 'Burning Point' on which Jimmy Vaughan comes to lend a hand on the guitar. Contrary to its predecessor, "Revolution Come... Revolution Go" returns to tracks that take more time to develop themselves with a large part culminating above six minutes and not hesitating to venture into progressive territories. The eponymous title is the best example with its changes of ambiences and tempi.

Warren Haynes and his band offer here a varied opus without dead time, not hesitating to slip some surprises here and there like this 'Drawn That Way' launched by an AC/DCl-like riff and ending on a long solo worthy of ZZ Top. On 'Traveling Tune', Country territories are covered with the help of Geordie Johnson's steel guitar. As for 'Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground', it sees the quartet taking a traditional instrumental blues and turning it into an epic piece with a dark and disturbing atmosphere that rises in power and intensity for a majestic finale. This last adjective can also be applied to the whole of this opus, one of the strengths of which consists in perfectly marrying the inventive side of Gov't Mule with more classical pieces but still as unstoppable. In this respect, the ballads 'Dreams & Songs' and 'Easy Times' prove that there is no need for originality at all costs to trigger deep and sincere emotions. In the same niche, 'The Man I Want To Be' is slow and poignant while increasing in intensity. Finally, the powerful 'Thorns Of Life' and the groovy soul of 'Sarah, Surrender' complete a flawless ensemble.

With this new protean yet coherent opus, Gov't Mule returns to the highest summits and offers a work that is not without reminding us of his first recording misdeeds. Warren Haynes and his band still have things to say and can still show originality. The quartet proves that Southern rock still has a bright future ahead of it as long as it keeps an open mind.
