Since several albums, Mike Tramp has imposed a strong brand name that is not limited to his bewitching voice. Whether with "Nomad" (2015) or "Maybe Tomorrow" (2017), the Danish has reached a level of excellence. Recorded in Denmark and mixed in Sweden, the newcomer is called "Stray From The Flock" and sees the former singer of White Lion and Freak Of Nature still surrounded by the same team, confirming the band spirit he holds dear. It would even be tempting to add an additional member to the formation with the motorbike that appears on the cover for the third consecutive time.

Just like on his previous album, Mike Tramp nevertheless managed to breathe a few changes into a recipe that is still marked by this delicate balance between rock and folk, melancholy and hope and European and North American influences. 'No End To War' which opens this new journey is one of the best examples by spreading a sad and disillusioned atmosphere over more than 8 minutes which are not without reminding some pieces of the Roger Waters, (Pink Floyd's era). It is also worth noting the magnificent solo on which the tempo accelerates in a tangle of guitars that confirms the place taken by Søren Andersen since "Maybe Tomorrow". We thus find the guitarist's luminous interventions several times as on the single "Dead End Ride", an energetic mid-tempo combining melancholy and catchy chorus.

The suite offers an alternation of calm pieces (the moving ballad "Homesick") and more striking rocks with catchy choruses such as this "You Ain't Free Anymore", Stonian, introduced by a motorcycle engine, or a "One Last Mission" with sharp guitars and a basic and effective AC/DC riff. Of course, all this remains pure Mike Tramp and can never be accused of plagiarism. But it is clear that on this opus, the artist does not hesitate to reveal his influences in a more obvious way. Tom Petty is not far away on US rock with the positive energy of 'Live It Out' and Bon Jovi points his nose on the playful and catchy 'Best Days Of My Life'. And as usual, after a delicate and metronomic 'Die With The Smile On Your Face' based on a diaphanous piano and ending with the ringing of bells in the distance, the listener discovers that he has once again let himself be carried away by a new collection of finely cut and alternated titles to make their effect without effort.

Although containing its share of new releases distilled with finesse and parsimony, "Stray From The Flock" continues Mike Tramp's work by confirming a strong and delicate identity. Although he does not fill the stadiums, the Dane is still a great storyteller who deserves his place alongside the greatest in the field of rock-folk, combining energy and emotion with a delicate balance. Another beautiful and great album from which it will be difficult to separate.

ROBIN TROWER: Coming Closer To The Day (2019)
ROCK - The weight of years has no influence on Robin Trower's music because it is played with respect for tradition and heart. That's one of the lessons of this magnificent blues-rock album.
YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: Blue Lightning (2019)
GUITAR HERO - With "Blue Lightning", Malmsteen tries a blues album. But where Yngwie goes, the groove dies.
