Even though he is approaching 40 years of age, Alexi Laiho looks like a young man, as if time had stopped. The same applies to his band. After some jolts, Children Of Bodom has regained a brilliant form and has just signed two very good albums. For his tenth album, "Hexed", Bodom finds a second guitarist with Daniel Freyberg and opts for purple with an ethereal cover that creates a very attractive cold and dark setting.

"Hexed" confirms that Children Of Bodom has returned to the fast death and black tinged sound that made its fame. Power blends with virtuosity with a mind-blowing side and a stunning natural freshness. The album is dynamic and makes musicians feel a simple, almost youthful pleasure, a remarkable thing after so many years of career.

They delighful us with direct, short and nervous tracks where melody and power mix with strength. 'Under Grass And Clover', 'Glass Houses' and 'Kick In A Spleen' are beautiful moments of bravery where Wirman's keyboard unleashes in perfect harmony with the guitars. With 'Soon Departed' and 'Say Never Look Back', the band still makes itself of a rare intensity, reminding us of Alexi's passage to Impaled Nazarene for this crazy and ultra fast side.

All this is gratifying and the technique is even more flamboyant on the very intense "Hexed". the track is like a neo-classical tinted symphonic with keyboard solos and guitars linking together in a crazy way. Not so far from a heavy old school, 'This Road' and 'Platitudes And Barren Words' are successful with Alexi's furious vocal. Finally, with 'Hecate's Nightmare', the band leans towards a horrific and heavy King Diamond.

"Hexed" is a success at all levels. Children Of Bodom confirms its great vitality and recovers all the freshness of its beginnings. This immediate and direct record should delight fans of the genre and bluff fans of technical mastery in the service of the songs.

CARAVELA ESCARLATE: Caravela Escarlate (2019)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - "Caravela Escarlate" is not an unpleasant listening but is considerably penalized by a production that does not bring any dynamism to compositions that would have needed it.
DIRTY SHIRT: Letchology (2019)
ALTERNATIVE METAL - Dirty Shirt's Romanians have found a balance between whiteness and darkness with a dizzying schizophrenic recipe for industrial folk metal.
