Roman Rouzine is not unknown to apprentice guitarists since he collaborated for some time with the magazine Guitar Part where he wrote a review on technique and velocity. In other words, at the risk of upsetting his natural humility, the Franco-Ukrainian has nothing to envy the best specialists of the instrument. He proved it in 2014 with the release of his first opus, "Genesis Of Delirium", which revealed a musician with virtuoso and melodic phrasing nourished by symphonic and neo-classical influences. With this second album, "Humans", the man delivers a much more surprising and adventurous essay, without denying his universe, quite the contrary.

Indeed, Roman Rouzine has endeavored for the composition of "Humans" to free himself as much as possible from the complex technical plans dear to guitarists of his caliber. Except for the title 'Rebirth', a tribute to his mentor Patrick Rondat, few are the typical shred shots in the ten compositions of "Humans". If the bias may be surprising on the part of a virtuoso guitarist, it is justified by the absolute confidence that the musician gives to the evocative power of his instrument. Here the guitar is entirely at the service of sensitivity and the intention to tell stories without the human voice intervening, with the exception of rare female choirs with evocative lyrical beauty ('Drama').

The result is a highly sophisticated album with an often dark cinematographic atmosphere ('Pulse'), combining the power of symphonic metal ('Hidden Faces', 'Reminiscence') and classical romanticism (the piano in 'Mad Circus', the waltz in 'Lacrimosa'). The sober musical themes developed in 'Humans' allow the guitarist to illustrate all the expressivity of his playing based on a subtle left hand vibrato and precise and tense bends thanks to a compressed guitar sound, sometimes too much, with little gain on the lead parts.

Roman Rouzine's music is imbued with a Slavic melancholy that irrigates the album and nourishes it with several tributes to his native Ukraine, notably the magnificent title 'ATO' with its evocative name. This underlying Slavic spirit contributes to the great homogeneity of the album, as much as its orchestral refinement and its so particular way of putting the guitar at the service of music.

Through his original approach to the instrumental guitar, the album gradually reveals itself over the course of listening and proves to be an ambitious and successful attempt to combine classicism and modernity.

HOIA: Scavenger (2019)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - Despite some good moments, and dark and often disturbing atmospheres very well rendered, "Scavenger" remains halfway successful and perhaps a little too ambitious.
