Labels and comparisons are elements to which we like to hang up new emerging groups in order to find benchmarks. Especially when the elders who cradled our youth and adult lives begin to set foot on the ground and put their guitars in the attic: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Slayer.... Thus Led Zeppelin found his younger clone personified by Greta Van Fleet and Aerosmith in the person of Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown especially when the son (Graham) of Brad Whitford plays in the band and the singer has false tunes of Steven Tyler.....
However, when you dig a little deeper, this comparison fades because the band offers more personal compositions, even if the roots are present. While many speak of an album of maturity at the end of the third production, "Truth & Lies" is more of an emancipation album. It begins with the single "Shock & Awe" with a riff that strangely reminds us of... Ghost with its worrying side but the comparison stops there: the talent of Americans to absorb these styles to better capture and transform them is very present. The rest is a pure succession of varied hits. The strength of Tyler and his gang is to offer a kind of initiatory and nicely coherent journey into the best that America has produced over a 40-year period.
Here the listener is immersed in the rich blues with "Ride" with solos always well-packed, with hairs that stand up when listening to the ballad "Shape I'm In" with southern accents and guitar chords that are always well placed. In addition to being very good on the guitar, Tyler has a pretty voice grain that is both calm and powerful enough to carry the vocal lines that are essentially very rock ('Panic Bouton'). Variations oblige, the breaths are numerous and in addition to the ballads, the band also proposes mid tempo sometimes a little country old school well felt as in the very beautiful "Judgment Day".
In this album, we feel the musicians' deep respect for the songs, in the sense that their technique is at the service of the compositions. Of course, sometimes they let themselves go ('You Drive Me Mad') but they know how to contain themselves where others would put tons of it and lengthen the pieces. You only have to listen to the very beautiful electro-acoustic "Out There" of a confusing simplicity and beauty until the end.
"Truth & Lies" thus marks both the confirmation of the musicians' and performers' talent of the band members and a progression for Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown. It can easily apply for the title of the rock album of the year and finally take the Americans out of the "band like..." category to become a band in its own right. Tyler is not an Aerosmith ersatz, he is inspired by it to better assert his personality. - Official website
