One of the Nordic Gods is back! Eclipse, a Swedish combo celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is emerging from the silence it had been immersed in for two years and the release of its "Monumentum", one of the big slaps of 2017. Erik Märtesson's band has not moved a bit since the last ode of the combo. However, it should be noted that bassist Magnus Ulfsted has just announced that he is leaving his partners.
Listening to the thundering "Viva La Victoria" that opens the album, inspiration has not deserted the band. This diabolically addictive track is the very example of what a melodic hard rock combo must bring together to get the crowds up. Unstoppable riffs, a breathless rhythm, a leading drum set and a catchy chorus. a real hymn !
Escape positioned in its continuity a smashing title that honores a woman : Mary Leigh. A British political activist and suffragist, she fought for women's rights at the beginning of the last century. Here too, the melody has an immediate impact. "Blood Wants Blood" stays in a combative theme and remains deliberately addictive in its melodic conception.
It's time for Eclipse to play the melancholy card with a mid-tempo that smells good on its chorus the ethnic ambiences developed by Dare, Darren Wharton's band, the man with the keyboards of the regreted Thin Lizzy. Clever, the Swedes then catch the listener with a title evoking the necessary union of men when the winds are contrary. 'United', about which Eclipse admits to had some political intentions, is a quiet piece that is difficult not to sing.
For the rest, the Swedes flirt with W.E.T. on the successful "Delirious" and its beautifull choirs, get nostalgics on the second mid-tempo "When The Winter Ends" with Celtic scents, play faster on "38 or 44" which once again offers, at the heart of its muscular guitars, a chorus that galvanizes. We then believe in the ballad with the opening of "Never Gonna Be Like You", but the band throws us one of the best choruses of the album associated with some who oh oh well known of the combo. The two final chapters of the work offer us a "Masquerade" and a "Take Me Home", the third mid-tempo once again crossed by movements reminiscent of Dare, full of elegance.
Eclipse has achieved the performance of giving a successor worthy of the wonderfull "Monumentum". This is certainly enough to allow the Swedes, who are now starting to pile up a significant number of irreproachable opuses, to be positionned as leaders of European melodic hard rock. - Official website
