Blind Guardian's symphonic album was expected. It was mentioned more than twenty years ago and began to emerge in 2010. The duo of Hansi Kürsch and André Olbrich has been pressing on the accelerator for two years to complete it, helped by Markus Heitz. The fan writer of the band wrote "Die Dunklen Lande", the basis of the story that mixes fantasy and real history around the 30-year war. This gives "Legacy Of The Dark Land" which sees Blind Guardian add to its name Twilight Orchestra to mark the difference with its metal face. Composed of 24 tracks, The duo called on Prague Filmharmonic for the music.
To enter this disc is to enter the soundtrack of an epic film with 13 interludes for the transition between the titles. If these dialogues are important for the cinematographic side, the desire to skip them is often there. The heart of the album is the 11 songs and what strikes you is the lightness of the whole: the absence of usual instruments avoids a certain heaviness and the airy production brings the necessary freshness. The richness of the arrangements then calls attention to itself. Olbrich's work with the orchestra is remarkable, the cinematographic side is obvious. 'Dark Cloud's Rising',' In The Underworld' as well as ''Nephilim'',''In The Red Dwarf's Tower'' and''Beyond The Wall'' have a very engaging emphasis and an imposing symphonic richness with incredible epic strength. They evoke the films of Tim Burton, Indiana Jones or Lord of the Rings for this ability to make the listener travel.
Other titles are more reminiscent of Blind Guardian's classic universe. War Feeds War','Point Of No Return' and 'Harvester Of Souls' are carried by splendid choruses and are easily imagined in a metallic version. Hansi is fabulous and lives his story as a storyteller with a light, mysterious and powerful tone. It is perfectly supported by majestic choirs, very important for the epic strength of the ensemble.
"Legacy Of The Dark Land" is not the record you listen to with a distracted ear. The fruit of a work that one guesses to be titanic, it requires a certain investment to seize all its riches. A real success, its freshness could reconcile some people with not always successful genre - Official website
