If the presence of girls in rock and metal is not surprising, 100% female bands still remain a relatively rare formula even if it is not recent, whether we think of Girlschool or the Runaways, pioneers of girlpower.
There are many of these two groups in VA Rocks, a young trio of ladies who are said to have gathered at the age of twelve to break the boredom of their city of Lund in Sweden. An EP and a first long format later ("Pull No Punches"), here they come with a second album. Its title is a statement that we are obliged to subscribe to because it seems so difficult to resist the blizzard caused by Ida Svensson (vocals and guitar), Klara Wedding (bass) and Frida Rosén (drums).
These girls plays a dirty and almost punk rock that evoke Motörhead, AC/DC as well as garage rock bands. The setting is set, that of a smoky harbour where you can suck beer by tapping your foot. Not really a place for young girls but preliminary tenderness is not really for our Swedish women, more focused on action than romance. They therefore go to the heart of the matter. Short, their tracks are agressive but overflowing with a positive force ('Gonna Get You') that feels good. Generally fast, witnesses the furious "Here Comes Trouble", "Rebel Blood" or the stirring "No More Fucks To Give" who starts the record, the tempo rarely gets stuck in the mud, with the exception of the crawling "Woman", while "Never In A Millions Years" pleasantly surprises as a conclusion, the only ballad of a menu placed under the sign of a vitality that never ends.
Perhaps the opus is not very ambitious, but that's not the point. These three chicks are there to kick ass and do it very well, spitting out a rock'n' roll as vigorous as contagious: I Love VA Rocks! - Official website
