If there was one main quality for Anvil to retain, it would be perseverance: the Canadian band never gave up during the long lean times. And while they had regained success, they did not rest on their laurels. The result was "Legal At Last", their eighteenth album, which came quickly after "Pouding The Pavement". Its title refers to the legalization of cannabis in Canada, which the trio is obviously waiting for. But if the title is friendly, the old-fashioned cover with an angel and an anvil is less convincing.
But what counts is the music and with Anvil, the listener knows what to expect before even listening to it. Composed of 12 tracks, the record is straight in the line of its predecessors but without sounding like a repeat. We find a wide variety of tones touching a lot of genres of the hard and heavy metal planet.
'Chemtrails' and 'Food For The Vulture' are made of swift heavy metal, and Anvil is going at it with a lot of energy. There's an efficient speed and nervous side to it and Lips' raspy vocals, fast soli and a deep drumming confirms the band's shape. The hard rock side comes out with 'I'm Alive' and 'Bottom Line'. Simple and straightforward, these tracks make you want to tap your feet in a pure spirit close to Motörhead or AC/DC. 'Gasoline' and 'Said And Done' are close to a Black Sabbath with a heavier side, overwhelming riffs and a stronger vocals. Finally, there are two tracks that are perfect for the stage. 'Legal At Last' is rejoicing with its heavy riff, an obvious chorus and a stunning instrumental part. 'Nabbed In Nebraska' is a variation of the famous 'Metal On Metal' with the same nervous mid-tempo side and a good chorus carried by the vicious vocals of Lips.
"Legal At Last' brings nothing new to the Anvil building, but it's not just another album. The Canadians offer a delightful patchwork of the best of their art. The record confirms that the time for retirement has not yet come. We hope to enjoy albums of this quality, which defy time and fashions, for a long time to come. - Official website
