When Steve Harris joined British Lion in 2012, many people thought the bassist was offering himself a short break. Indeed, an honourable album -but not without flaws, including a weak sound, a few poor tracks and a shy singer- and a few gigs later, the band had disappeared into obscurity. But at the end of 2019, Harris and his buddies came back taking advantage of a break from Iron Maiden to offer "The Burning".
For this opus, the band used a new producer, Tony Newton, and mainly features tracks written on the road between shows. The tracks sound much better, as Newton has chosen to keep it simple, very 70's style, more organic and lively. The result is an amazing record with tracks tinged with a retro but never old-fashioned spirit.
But first of all, let's give back to Richard Taylor what he deserves. Much criticized on the previous effort, the singer puts everyone in agreement this time: his veiled and melodic timbre is perfect for this kind of titles. He never forces his vocals, shows a great self-confidence and gives the band its full identity, far from the classic heavy standards.
Apart from the singing, we enjoy a nice teamwork with riffs and solos tinted with very 1970 and 1980 sounds and a bass that is present and at the same time discreet in the service of titles. 'Father Lucifer', 'Ligthning', 'Last Chance' and 'Land Of The Perfect People' have a crazy charm that evokes the best of a UFO with a clever mix between power and melody. On the other hand, the band reveals a very interesting heavy and galloping facet at the same time. 'The Burning', 'City Of Fallen Angels', 'Elysium', 'Spit Fire' and 'Bible Black' show a more self-confident band for a pleasing result. Finally, 'Native Son' will be highlighted for its folk side and on the beginning and for its delicacy and finesse for a deliciously catchy result.
There's something pleasant to see Steve Harris having fun when he could be resting. Much better than its predecessor, "The Burning" is a homogenous record without dead time or weakness which can be listened to with great pleasure. - Official website
