For years now, Poitou, and particularly its capital Poitiers, has been the melting pot in which a high quality rock made in France is blended. In the middle of the Klone, Trepalium and Step in Fluid, among others, there is now a trio called Uncut who releases its first album in the form of a generously packed EP entitled "From Blue".
Far from the suburbanite who spits his testosterone through poor rhymes, this Uncut doesn't need to show the muscles to propose a virile music. It's about hairy blues-rock, in a most effective configuration of vocal guitar, bass (actually baritone guitar) and drums. An alloy made of finesse and roughness, Uncut has found the formula to stand out, as illustrated by the haunting "Blue Eyes Lover" whose touch on the guitar will leave a Hendrix aftertaste and the burned choruses deploy an irresistible heavy energy. Even heavier and more stunning, 'Bee Blues' envelops the listener in a comforting psychedelic vapor with its sweet melodies and almost whispered songs. This "blues de l'abeille" of nearly eight minutes of ascension is already demonstrating all the trio's talent and could quickly become a classic reference point on which to build for future albums.
The sequel offers a 'Deandra' and 'Snake Boogie' in more classical approaches but highly effective in terms of riffs and power. "From Blue" contains these four original tracks, the first two of which are covered in acoustic version, to which is added a demo "Gold Digger Woman" with a heady chorus, not to be neglected. The choice of these unplugged versions is judicious because they bring out the blues color of Uncut's compositions and the full range of Alexy Sertillange's rocky voice.
In this first EP Uncut plays the insurance card with two cautious but perfectly executed tracks and two others more nuanced in which the trio delivers itself more intimately. The objective of this EP which is as much to make itself known as to give some clues about the qualities of a band is achieved.
