"Örvény" in 2017 had laid the foundation for a strong musical identity by the Hungarians of Perihelion. They return this winter with a much-awaited "Agg".
The first visual impression with the album is excellent thanks to the magnificent artwork. As for the first auditory contact, it lays the same foundations as two years ago with familiar post-rock / post-metal sounds. The vocals, still in Hungarian, brings a special exotic authenticity. However, on the first and hard-hitting 'Tavasszal a vadak', Vasvári returns to an essentially shouted song that prevents the full essence of the song from being felt. Fortunately (or not), with 'Rjek' and the excellent 'Erdo', the band returns to the clear, expressive and emotional vocals that had made 'Örvény' an original album.
The first part of this "Agg" is reminiscent of Anathema (from the "A Natural Disaster" period) with its atmospheric moods and intelligent writing. The production gives pride of place to crystalline guitars supporting the post-rock aspect of the Debrecen natives' music. But this is to the detriment of a rhythm section which only finds a place on rare occasions (the long progressive rise of 'Erdo' and the closer 'Agg'), confining it most of the time to a small anecdotal portion. Fortunately, the work of composition reduce these flaws and make this "Agg" pleasant for the fans of post rock/metal that tracks like 'Parazs' or 'Nyugo' (although repetitive at the end) will convince.
Finally, a rather short duration (36 minutes for 7 tracks) and an unbalanced production somewhat tarnish a rather attractive picture and, above all, the surprise effect doesn't work as much anymore. If the quality of writing of the Hungarians is promising, we were entitled to expect a little more of a fourth effort. "Agg" is nevertheless a pleasant album whose successor will be awaited with even more exigency. - Official website
