We thought we had lost them after the magnificent "The Last Waves Of Summer" (1998) which seemed to have no successor. Taking his time due to the overloaded schedules of his members, the Australian pub-rock legend nevertheless continues to offer us new record releases every three or four years with a "Blood Moon" that lands in our playlist at the end of this year 2019.
Once again produced by Kevin Shirley, the new opus sees its purpose focused on ten tracks. So we might as well not leave any doubt by confirming that it is indeed to demonstrate flawless efficiency that Barnes, Moss, Walker, Small and Drayton have made a drastic selection in their latest compositions to retain only finely chiseled gems. From the unifying rock and first single 'Getting The Band Back Together' which opens the hostilities with its unstoppable chorus interpreted by the whole band, to the endearing mid-tempo pop ballad 'You're So Beautiful' which closes the set with Ian Moss on vocals, you won't be disappointed.
Ten tracks and no fill! That could sum up this "Blood Moon" that sees Cold Chisel sweep every facet of its identity by offering the best of what it knows how to compose and interpret. Jimmy Barnes' vocals is still as powerful and inhabited, even heartbreaking ('The Killing Time', 'Someday'). Ian Moss' solos are always incredibly fine with the old school brand that made his reputation ('Land Of Hope', 'Drive', 'Accident Prone'). It is from the delicate balance between these two artists that comes the power of Cold Chisel and the craftsman who hides behind these two figures and ensures their efficient and discreet operation, it is Don Walker. The keyboardist's playing is just discreet enough to let his partners shine but without being forgotten, choosing his interventions with accuracy ('I Hit The Wall', 'Boundary Street'). As for the rhythm section, it brings an unstoppable yet discreet groove and dynamism. In this respect, it is impressive to listen to the precision of Charley Drayton's work, who will finally have perfectly replaced the late Steve Prestwich.
It is therefore impossible to talk about each track as they all deserve to be listened to carefully. With talent and experience, Cold Chisel offers one of his best albums which, while it may not have any historical titles like 'Flame Trees', 'Cheap Wine' or 'Bow River', shows a quality that is maintained at its highest level from beginning to end. Superb balance between enthusiasm and experience, between energy and delicacy, between efficiency and quality of composition, "Blood Moon" did not become number one in Australia by chance. - Official website
