Let's be clear, Burning Witches doesn't invent anything, recycling the heavy metal of the 80's with a femininity without which it would certainly be much less interesting! However, beyond the marketing argument barely hidden behind a band composed only of girls, all dressed in leather and nails, let's admit that the Swiss master their subject.
If "Hexenhammer" (2018) had inducted the new guitarist Sonia Nusselder, who has since perfectly found her place, "Dance With The Devil" seals as for him the arrival of Laura Guldemond as frontwoman in charge of replacing the resigning Seraina Telli. This third vintage confirms that this new recrue is a good choice, shouting like a Rob Halford in high heels ('Lucid Nightmare').
Although inspired by Walpurgis' night, don't expect this album to be a truly conceptual work. At most, this theme only inspires to the damsels a general dark atmosphere and lyrics fueling witchcraft ('Black Magic') which of course lend themselves perfectly to this sharp heavy metal that irrigates high-pitched vocals and riffs cast in steel. What remains is an unstoppable array of anthems dedicated to European festivals where they will be covered in chorus by an army of faithful fans, fully committed to the cause of these Amazons as charming as they are bellicose. And these female warriors have no use for the tender moments to which they only sacrifice the five minutes of 'Black Magic', a power-ballad in the great tradition of the eighties.
No, rather than purring with pleasure, the beautiful ones prefer to bite. They do this by multiplying the sharp protrusions of the dreaded 'Dance With The Devil', 'Six Feet Underground' or the already known 'Wings Of Steel', which fill a catchy first part. Less immediate but just as seductive ('The Sisters Of Fate'), the other opens itself on a dark world, as witnesses this 'Threefold Return' which sees Laura venturing into an almost black metal register. And the re-reading of Manowar's 'Battle Hymn' is not only an opportunity for the girls to invite Symphony X bassist Mike Lepond and Ross The Boss, but above all to take part in a glorious legacy and, in so doing, to underline their belonging to the great family of heavy metal.
Melodic and sharp, "Dance With The Devil" is a powerful concentration of anthems to which it seems difficult not to succumb. Burning Witches confirms that they're not just a bunch of girls who are here to do extras, but a solid band destined to last. - Official website
