"Rewriting the OST of the 1920 film "Das Cabinet Des Dr Caligari" is a risky bet that takes Toundra away from the usual heavy post-rock to an atmospheric Ambient rock. To be listened to while watching the movie so as not to miss it."

While Toundra has established itself as one of the heavy post-rock leaders of the 2010's, the Spaniards are taking an unexpected atmospheric and cinematic turn. Their new playground? A soundtrack on the theme of "Dr. Caligari's Cabinet", considered the first real horror film and released exactly 100 years ago in 1920. Tribute.

The original soundtrack revisited by Toundra is now based on an introductory intro and six acts that are more or less faithful to the original script, which includes eight acts. It uses the current codes of atmospheric post-rock, sometimes reminiscent of the most introspective Anathema, on a background of light guitars and a stripped down but very present rhythm section. The main theme, quite simple, is declined in many variations with a few climbs always shut down by a restraint in the first acts to stick to the story.

The atmosphere is falsely light at the beginning, then frankly disturbing at the beginning of Act 2 before slowly rising (at last) in power, ... and then coming down (again). And so it is all along the acts during which we clearly distinguishe the different scenes since they all end on a musical frustration when the contained energy that we hoped finally released is suddenly extinguished. This emotional lift will certainly constitute a major point of contention between those who will love this approach and those who will castigate it by regretting the lack of raising moments. The repetition is the other black point of this album which, struggling to take off, takes up the same themes throughout the 73 minutes.

"Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari" is a work apart in Toundra's discography, a personal project of the Spanih band as a tribute to the cinema of the twenties. It's also a risky gamble that will confuse the band's fans but will delight fans of atmospheric post-rock. From this point of view, the exercise is a success because the emotion is there. But to fully appreciate it, you'll have to listen to it while watching the original film (available on the usual platforms) and realize the relevance of the rewriting. To be taken for what it is, a soundtrack, in the strict sense of the word.

KING SOLOMON HICKS: Harlem (2020)
BLUES - New child prodigy of the blues, King Solomon Hicks delivers with "Harlem" a very classical and too timid first solo album.
HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS: Weather (2020)
ROCK - While it will undoubtedly be the last studio record of Huey Lewis & The News, "Weather" condenses all the qualities of the Californian legend for a finale in apotheosis.
