Formed in Wiesbaden, Germany in 2007, The New Roses has already released three studio albums and opened for artists like ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Accept, Saxon and Joe Bonamassa. In other words, if we discover the Teutonic band with this "Nothing But Wild", it's not a beginner band that we're dealing with here. In twelve years, the quartet has had time to run in its racy hard rock with obvious US roots, while digesting its influences.

Led by Timmy Rough's raspy and powerful vocals and Norman Bites' sharp guitar, the album starts on a nervous and wildly punkish basis ('Soundtrack Of My Life', 'Can't Stop Rock & Roll'). Just as energetic, the sequel is harder US but with a range of influences from hair-glam metal and Poison ('Nothing But Wild') to highway rock ('Glory Road'), through mid-tempi combining AC/DC riffs with Bryan Adams ('Heartache') or Dead Daisies ('As The Crow Flies') choruses, and power ballads with country accents that Bon Jovi wouldn't have disowned ('The Bullet', 'The Only Thing').

If the last tracks quoted give off a feeling of twilight melancholy and reassuring at the same time, the rest is endowed with an energy that takes everything in its stride without neglecting the catchy melodies and choruses. The shadow of a Nickelback is not far away on 'Running Out Of Hearts' and the atmosphere can be heavier and more worrying during a 'Give & Take' on which Thom Blunier (Shakra) comes to lay a nice solo.

With 'Nothing But Wild', The New Roses imposes a strong identity with an assertive US identity and communicative energy. It would be a shame if fans of the genre missed this opus which marry melodies with power. So if you decide to ride your large motorcycles and hit the highways at sunset, this opus will be the perfect soundtrack to your road trip.
