""#13", Gotthard's new opus, would be great if half the tracks weren't average."

We left Gotthard three years ago with a "Silver" that left fans of the "Lipservice"/"Domino's Effect"/"Need To Believe" trilogy with mixed memories. The Swiss had indeed pursued their intention to move away from the (very) melodic hard rock that had made their success, while lacking bite, both in terms of compositions and production. And now, in the year 2020, the thirteenth album of the Helvetians has been released. Its name is "#13" and it contains thirteen tracks.
The tracks from this opus can be stowed in three boxes, one hard & heavy, one mid-tempo (with or without blues touch) and one ballad. The album starts with two good songs and an incongruity. Let's start with 'Bad News', which could be some Heavy Foreigner and which develops an unconvincing melody, and 'Every Time I Die', more speedy, which brings a smile back to the faces of fans of easy listening melodies and guitar lovers. Then you'll meet Aerosmith, Def Leppard from "Slang" and Thunder (but not Gotthard) on the oriental-keyed single "Missteria" which will surprise many, and not necessarily in a good way. As for the first ballad, it will certainly leave you stunned ( ABBA's 'S.O.S.' in a slower version than the original).
Then the miracle happens with the arrival of several tracks in the style of the successful songs of yesteryear. 'Another Last Time' is a melancholic mid-tempo with a touch of bluesy and a melody that finally catches the ear. 'Better Than Love' is a potential hit worthy of the radio-friendly magnificence of the past, just like 'Save The Date' with its Thin Lizzy guitars. The positive trend continues with the moving ballad 'Marry You', where Springsteen is not far away, followed by 'Man On A Mission', an endearing bluesy soft rock, and 'No Time To Cry' with its melodic power and explosive acceleration. The rest of the album is equally pleasing thanks to 'I Can Say I'm Sorry', the third ballad, more electric this time, full of backing vocals mixed with Leoni's interventions. It's a pity that the album ends with a psychedelic electro-acoustic 'Rescue Me' that leaves you speechless.
Curious opus that this "#13" which blows cold then hot in (almost) two distinct parts. This makes listening to this new delivery from the Swiss both indispensable and unfortunate. Nevertheless, don't sulk your pleasure, the second part of the work is really pleasant. As for the titles judged here as the least striking, they could nevertheless hold your attention, even temporarily. - Official website
