"One Step Over The Line" is the second opus of First Signal, the combo that allows Harry Hess, the frontman of Harem Scarem, to take his mind off things. Six years have passed since the previous eponymous opus...  About the Line-up, it's the revolution. Harry Hess has turned everything upside down. Everybody is out, including Dennis Ward (Magnum, ex-Pink Cream 69), the bass player and composer of the first album, and welcome to Michael Palace (Palace) who takes over and officiates on guitar and four strings, but also to Daniel Flores (The Murder Of My Sweet, Find Me), who comes in on keyboards and drums.

Traditionally, when an artist takes distance from his band, it is to propose a different approach to music than the one he initially develops. Hess is one of the exceptions that confirms the rule. First Signal is the clone of Harem Scarem. The fake split of the latter being now behind us, we now have two similar bands for the price of one. A godsend for fans of melodic hard rock.

This "One Step Over The Line" is a perfect album... from the sixth to the ninth track, and pleasant on the other seven tracks. This is the synthetic impression left by this second rendezvous with First Signal. So, rest assured that you'll be listening to 'Minute Of Your Time', 'She Is Getting Away' and 'December Rain' and their heady choruses, as well as the moving ballad 'Weigh Me In'. The rest is a notch below because of a linear side weighing down the whole a bit.

Less successful than its predecessor and its successor, "One Step Over The Line" deserves attention, however, especially for the four major tracks mentioned above that it would be a pity to ignore.

Moi c'est pourtant "Kharma" que je préfère ! mais je suis d'accord pour dire que c'est le moins efficace des trois albums, même si cela reste un bon disque.

JOE SATRIANI: Shapeshifting (2020)
GUITAR HERO - "Shapeshifting" is probably Joe Satriani's most intimate and introspective album.
DARK MATTER: Nebula To Black Hole (2020)
GOTHIC METAL - A strong emotional power playing on the contrasts of atmospheric and melancholic styles against death/dark metal, ideal to paint an ambitious concept about life from birth to death.
