It all starts in 2004. The three Lovell sisters, Jessica, Megan and Rebecca, founded an acoustic bluegrass band, The Lovell Sisters. The band recorded two albums and was a huge success in Georgia, until Jessica decided to leave to continue her studies and put an end to the adventure. The trio became a duo in 2010. Goodbye The Lovell Sisters and hello Larkin Poe. Megan and Rebecca take the opportunity to change their tone from their first album, "Kin". Gone are the acoustic guitars and dobros, now it's time for electrified instruments: Rebecca's guitar and Megan's lap-steel. These two instruments are the personality of Larkin Poe, as well as the obvious complicity of the two sisters, whose fifth album, "Self Made Man", proves that it is not necessary to be unhappy and tortured to play the blues with authenticity.
Authentic is indeed the first qualifier that comes to mind when listening to "Self Made Man". Joyful is the second. The duo may play a very roots music, a perfect crossover between blues ('Back Down South'), southern rock ('God Moves On The Water') and country music ('Easy Street'), but it's always optimism that takes over, as if the two sisters were whispering in our ears that it's all just music and that music is first and foremost there to be enjoyed.
From then on, it becomes difficult not to fall under the spell of "Self Made Man". First of all because Larkin Poe masters his subject. Then because the complementarity of the two sisters is so obvious that their pleasure of playing quickly becomes communicative. Rebecca's earthy riffs and powerful mezzo-soprano voice ('She's A Self Made Man') are inseparable from Megan's vocal harmonies and lap-steel solos ('Ex-Con'). This perfect symbiosis is Larkin Poe's main strength and permeates all the duo's compositions, from the most pop ('Tears Of Blue To Gold') to the most psychedelic ('Every Bird That Flies').
"Self Made Man" is a subtle album that succeeds in combining traditional American music, joie de vivre and the pleasure of playing. Larkin Poe appropriates the codes of blues and country music by bringing a feminine touch that makes all the difference. This album is a real ray of sunshine, ready to warm the bodies and hearts of the most hardened listeners. - Official website
