"Art rock a bit of a catch-all, "The Bastard" will evoke in turn gothic, punk, fuzz or pop without leaving an imperishable trace in the memories."

Palaye Royale was born in 2008 from the desire of three brothers to start a band. After two EPs and singles in the charts, the band is signed on the Sumerian Records label for its first record "Boom Boom Room (Side A)" in 2016. Two years after the release of "Side B", the American-Canadians return for their third album "The Bastards".

The three brothers practise a kind of rock art, torn apart by adolescent existential problems, which is inspired by a lot of genre, alternative, pop, punk and which likes gothic and morbid connotations, supported by androgynous gestures and postures and pale make-up. Musically, Palaye Royale offers short tracks of three minutes on average. If the proposed rock is not revolutionary and even rather simplistic in the riffs and melodic ideas, the direct formats and the variety deployed throughout these fourteen tracks avoid the feeling of boredom.

The beginning of the record doesn't facilitate its immersion because Palaye Royale immediately unfolds its most gothic compositions, heavily charged with electro effects and enhanced with saturated vocals that are quite irritating. The change comes at the mid-tempo 'Lonely', a dark track which tells the traumatism suffered in Remington Leith's childhood. The twilight climate that reigned until then finally lets some lights in, making the listening more cheerful and catchy as with 'Nervous Breakdown', 'Hang On To Yourself' which could make you think of Marroon 5 or the terribly fuzzy 'Nightmares'. Then the Americans return to the darkness of the beginning, in a less naive way, with the aptly named 'Doom (Empty)' and the very Marilyn Manson 'Masochist' to slowly fall into depression on the occasion of an orchestrated and depressive piano-vocal 'Redeemer'.

"The Bastards" is not the ideal album to celebrate the end of the lockdown unless you want to cultivate your masochistic tendencies. Nevertheless, "The Bastards" is a record that is easy to listen to but whose experience won't leave an indelible trace.

DOOM - Alone in this "Black Metal" that bears his name so badly, Magnus Pelander misses this acoustic escapade so far away from the vintage hard rock to which Witchcraft has accustomed us.

THRASH - Bleed From Within finds here the perfect balance between devastating Thrash metal, inspired Deathcore and Metalcore anthems.
