The Moon And The Nightspirit is a duo as rare as it is precious, and we watch out for each new offering like a mystical and woody Grail. From the original "Of Dreams Forgotten And Untold Legends", published fifteen years ago already by the Portuguese label Equilibrium Music, Agnes Toth and Mihaly Szabo have established a rather unique style, whose dark folk dimension and dark poetry may bring it close to Dead Can Dance but whose Hungarian origins give it a very particular colouring as well as a twilight and forest soul that owes everything to this land with its strange and unreal atmosphere.
If the metal roots of the band never really emerged, the connections with the pagan scene are nevertheless obvious, fuelled by the melancholic character of a score numbed by sadness, while the shamanic path the band takes builds a bridge with Heilung and other Wardruna. Three years after the excellent "Metanoia", The Moon And The Nightspirit finally offers us the fruit of his dreamy peregrinations. The formula remains unchanged as the quality.
Like his elders, "Aether" has something of a nocturnal wandering in the depths of mysterious landscapes on the borders of fantasy. Jewel of writing and progression, each track is chiselled with a science of dreamlike atmospheres and skeletal arrangements, an admirable science that touches perfection without emptying the couple's powerful emotional music of its dark and dramatic substance ('Egi Messezeségek'). Limpid, the sound recording that gives substance to their tragically dry instruments is thus always at the service of a sensory ether.
One only has to let oneself sink into the intimacy of 'A Mindenség Hivàsa', undoubtedly one of the most accomplished creations of the Hungarians, to grasp all the disenchanted beauty of this contemplative and percussive canvas that looks like a shady saraband. The violin lines vibrate with desperate force, Agnes's voice is adorned with a ghostly halo, and Mihaly is in charge of hatching the sky with dark clouds. Seven minutes of pure happiness. More than the assembly of songs put end to end, one guesses that "Aether" has been thought as a whole, as an indivisible whole where each piece is positioned with harmony, from the disturbing eponymous track, a sort of long introduction with phantasmagorical tints, to the 'Asha' that rocks this feminine voice as fragile as it is elusive.
Extremely worked, "Aether" is a black gem carved in a pagan and poetic folk which illustrates if need be the inestimable value of The Moon And The Nightspirit, a bewitching duo whose art keeps intact its power of fascination, able to tear us away from the everyday life to make us travel in a world full of mysteries... - Official website
