The German kosmische muzik of the 1970s has lost none of its evocative power or its power of fascination, which explains why musicians today still pay tribute to it. One thinks of Dirk Jan Müller (Electric Orange) and of course of E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr, a Finnish band which is among its most exciting heirs. The latter also illustrates that doom leads to everything, even progressive rock, or at least to its most spatial side, since the presence in its ranks of Kimi Kärki, former guitarist of Reverend Bizarre and current Lord Vicar, has led many towards this project that he has been leading for a good ten years with Ismo Virta, Jaako Penttinen and especially Pertti Grönholm, who signs the majority of the compositions.

Two (un)inhabited flights later, "Kometenbahn" (2013) followed by "Spiralo" (2014), the Scandinavians are finally back with "Non Plus Ultra", a double ration synthesizing the best of this antediluvian cosmic and yet so timeless music. The fruit of a long work of writing and recording spread out between 2016 and 2019, mastered by the legendary Joachim Heinz Ehrig, former drummer and leader of Grobbschnitt, it is to a real journey of more than 80 minutes in the infinite vastness of space that this third programme invites us.

The statement of the instruments used, synthesizers, Mellotron and other sequencers, is already enough to transport us very far, a fantasized arsenal evoking the pioneers of electronic rock, among whom slips Manuel Göttsching whose stellar guitar covers with its undulating shadow the lines woven by Kärki ('Die Suche Nach Dem Horizont'). The length of these eight tracks alone also makes us dream. Often ten minutes long (even more for some of them), they sound like the promise of inordinate journeys, haunting expeditions through unknown worlds that we discover by small touches.

If they are inspired by the works of their glorious elders, Grönholm and his companions never get lost in the simple copy, however precise it may be. Their intelligence combined with a rare talent enables them above all to capture the essence of what krautrock was, sometimes hypnotic ('Hypnogenesis III' and its haunting oscillations), Melancholic and desolate too ('Traumraum'), suitable for an excursion into an orientalizing ('Aus Dem Kollaps Geboren'), mysterious ('Der Doppelgaenger') and always bewitching ('Die Vergangene Zukunft' which evokes Klaus Schulze's 'Moondawn' and 'Mirage' era). Despite its epic duration, 'Non Plus Ultra' never bores, because the band knows how to drag us in its wake thanks to dreamy melodies that lull as much as they fascinate ('Bahnoff 77').

As a soundtrack, "Non Plus Ultra" appears both as a condensed, a definition of kosmisch musik and an outcome for E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr whose we can hardly see how they could do better in the future...
