"Walter Trout offers a new masterpiece in which the depth of the emotions is not at the expense of a benevolent energy, by varying the words and the moods without being locked in a blues with a too narrow mind."

There is definitely a before and after 2014 for Walter Trout. Before this date there was Dr. Trout, a talented artist who was sure of his talent in every way. Then came a serious health problem that saw him look the great reaper in the face and get away with an unhoped-for liver transplant. Since then, Mister Walter has taken over, as talented as ever but so much more humane. After a sublime and cathartic "Battle Scars", the man has gone on to produce a series of high-flying albums and exciting collaborations. Without us knowing where he gets this energy from, here he offers his fifth opus in six years with "Ordinary Madness" recorded just before the confinement in Robby Krieger's studio and produced by Eric Corne.
For this new offering, and without making it a new concept-album, he plunges once again into the depths of his feelings, dealing particularly with aging and the passage of time. It must be said that he is approaching 70 years of age and that the subject touches him deeply, even if his energy and talent remain intact. Whether it's at the border of Deep Purple hard rock ('Wanna Dance'), in a southern rock atmosphere with a gleaming harmonica ('Final Curtain Call'), or in the form of a smoky bluesy ballad ('The Sun Is Going Down'), the man is unmatched in sharing his emotions and touching us in the depths of our souls, especially on his wonderful guitar soli..
It would be unseemly not to also mention the hypnotizing twilight 'Up Above The Sky' and the energetic 'OK Boomer' which deal with the same theme with such class and feeling. But Walter Trout doesn't lock himself up in his own anxieties and knows how to vary the subjects while maintaining the intensity of his words. The best example of this is the heartbreaking 'All Out Of Tears' co-written with his friend Teeny Tucker about the loss of her son. As for the captivating title of the same name, it plunges into new inner abysses related to the current health situation. In the midst of all this, a few pieces bring a bit of soothing light, such as the delicate and fragile folk ballad 'My Foolish Pride', the rock-folk 'Heartland' in the style of Mike Tramp or Tom Petty, the tender and bewitching ballad 'Heaven In Your Eyes' and the blues-funky 'Make It Right' with its communicative energy.
Walter Trout offers a new masterpiece in which the depth of the emotions is not at the expense of a benevolent energy, by varying the words and the moods without being locked in a blues with a too narrow mind. After such a demonstration of a talent equal to its authenticity, all that remains is to reassure the artist that if his age advances, his talent is not affected in any way. - Official website
