""Wide Awake But Still Asleep" should please the fan of classic 70's progressive rock but disappoint the one looking for a bit of modernity and originality."

Shaman Elephant is a band that is part of a progressive movement in the country, Norway, which has contributed to the rise of black metal. But where others would have brought modern touches with great electronic reinforcement, the Norwegians have chosen to offer compositions in a more historical, more fundamental style with melodies that are not all immediately assimilated. In a sense, "Wide Awake But Still Asleep" takes up the torch of the previous album ("Crystals" released in 2016) with psychedelic touches.
The band is thus the specialist of ambiences with long instrumental developments where the keyboards and the mellotron take the lion's share (the eponymous title) without forgetting the guitaristic eruptions bringing a little more dynamism to the whole ('H.M.S. : Death, Rattle and Rol' or 'Stely Dan') a little like Led Zeppelin ('Strange Illusions'). The symbiosis of these two dimensions is embodied in 'Traveller', culmination of the album from the top of its eleven minutes very shamanic, incantatory, epileptic between hard rock and pure progressive.
The other side of the coin of such an orientation is a lack of personality and modernity (well, on this point it is not the goal posted by the group). The lover of historical progressive rock will certainly find in this new album with a cover very close to Camel's "Dust And Dreams" an interest all the more as the production fits perfectly with the style. On the other hand, the one who is looking for a little more hybridity between tradition and modernity will be a little disappointed. - Official website
