"Seether follows the signposted route of the grunge with this uneven and too rarely dazzling "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"."

If there is only one left, it will be Seether. No matter what anyone says, it remains one of the only bands that really perpetuates the grunge tradition, in spirit with garage-like riffs as well as in lyrics, well-tortured. We could talk about alternative rock to make it modern, but we have to admit that this new album, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum", remains nevertheless well in the tradition of Seattle and the big brother Nirvana, with a more modern production of course. You only have to listen to tracks like 'Pride Before The Fall' or 'Failure' to be convinced. From this point of view, no one can reproach the band for its constancy, especially since its leader Shaun Morgan decided to do without labels and to produce everything by himself in order not to lose the soul of the band.

Since "Poison The Parish", released three years ago, Seether has recruited Corey Lowery as full-time second guitarist. His contribution is clearly felt on the best tracks of the album: 'Can't Go Wrong' and 'Beg'. Two raging little bombshells that prove once again that Seether is never as good as he is on the heaviest tracks. Alas, they are only two songs in the middle of what we have to call an average album.

Indeed, on the whole and with the exception of the two aforementioned titles, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" shines neither by its originality nor by its will to fight. Between classic grunge without surprise ('Dead And Done', 'Let It Go') and soft rock with an FM tendency ('Dangerous', 'Liar'), Seether relies mostly on consensual compositions that only catch the attention with rare exceptions (the catchy 'Bruised And Bloodied'). Although the production is impeccable and above the average of traditional grunge, titles like 'Wasteland' or 'Drift Away' are clearly a quarter of a century behind.

Nevertheless, Seether remains an endearing band that continues to go on against all odds. Even if this road is more and more marked out, grunge fans will find their happiness listening to "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum". It's already not so bad.
