Unique in the Genesis discography, "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" is a musical period in itself. Because it seems to belong more to Peter Gabriel than to Genesis? It's true that Peter's first solo albums are directly or indirectly derived from it. Probably the Gab' thought, after this new achievement, that he had to fulfil his musical vocation independently of the Quintet. The vocal accents that he provides here, in particular, have never been heard on the previous albums.

After several months of composition work, a double album rich in sounds, solos, emotion and theme revivals is born. And it is Peter's story, told through the songs, that gives the album its strength.

Once upon a time, Rael was a young Puerto Rican from New York who lived on the streets like a thug. One day, Rael's down-to-earth life is disrupted by a strange cloud that descends on Broadway and takes him to a mysterious underground. Searching for the exit, Rael encounters various trials that are all allegories of his ungrateful fate in the Big Apple. A fate crossed by that of another character lost in the underground: John, Rael's 'brother', in fact the symbol of the WASP. John has a pronounceable first name, he remains impassive to their misfortune while Rael cries and moans to find his way back into the underground labyrinth.

Whether you like the story or not, "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" is a real museum piece. The vast majority of its tracks are simply fantastic. It's a raucous, sharp, cavernous rock, but of an incredible richness, showing an unrivalled cerebral power, a kind of Genesis' "The Wall", less dark, but maybe more apocalyptic, with an incredibly pervasive mystical dimension. The counterpart is that it is not possible to listen to it in all circumstances, but isn't that the trademark of the greatest musical creations?

The first volume is very dense and difficult to describe. Every moment is a moment of suspense or mystery. From beginning to end, it is an indescribable, unique, indivisible, hypnotic work. The second part is slightly backwards with notably a last track that singularly lacks lyricism to close this extraordinary album.

"The Lamb lies down on Broadway" is Rock and Prog, but it's much more than that. Is it still Genesis? Or already Peter Gabriel? Whatever it is, you won't get out of it unscathed.

ATMOSPHERIC METAL - "Sin Pecado" confirms Moonspell's stylistic evolution towards more atmospheric, less extreme metal.

ROCK - Both surprising and addictive, "Move" grabs the attention from its first riff to release it only at the end of its last track.
