Through hard work, Ensiferum has become an important formation in the Viking folk metal sphere. But it now has the concerns of the established formations... "Thalassic" is his eighth album and lately the band has been less convincing: without being bad, his last two albums have disappointed some fans with a lack of inspiration, the epic force seeming to have disappeared.

The intro, 'Seafarer's Dream' sets the mood: epic and tinged with the spirit of the ocean, it takes the listener on an adventure in Viking country. The first part of the album is then an impressive slap in the face that allows us to rediscover the strength of the band's beginnings.

Served by a powerful sound 'Rum, Women, Victory', 'Andromeda', 'The Defence Of The Stampo' and 'Run From The Crushin Tide' are future classics, with a speedy and melodic tone, cut from the best of folk metal with great epic force. The strong point comes from the vocals: the growl brings a beautiful fury but the clear vocals take a very strong place in the songs. Pekka Montin marks the spirits with a powerful and catchy tone and a nice touch of melancholy, taking the songs into another dimension. If we add superb warrior choruses and instrumental parts that emphasize the folk, we get a perfect cocktail.

In the second part, Ensiferum has the excellent idea to amplify the folk facet. 'For Sirens' and 'Midsummer Magic' are catchy and festive ritornellas with strong melodies through successful folk instrumental parts. The songs are also beautifully sung in clear, rocky and cheesy tones, or in growl for a catchy result. 'One With The Sea' is a beautiful epic ballad full of melancholy and Viking fortitude. With 'Cold Northland (Vainämoinen Part III)'. Ensiferum signs a long piece that alternates atmospheres; the title takes us on a journey full of melancholy, a Viking soul and a certain epic charge, moving from softness to power with efficiency, perfectly served by the combination of clear vocals and growl.

With "Thalassic", the Finnish band signs a remarkable opus in the shape of a voyage on board a Viking ship. With this album to be classified among its best achievements, it takes again beautiful colors and finds a leader status with a certain class.

SORCERER: Lamenting Of The Innocent (2020)
DOOM - With power and majesty, "Lamenting Of The Innocent" raises the colors of this typically Swedish Heavy Doom Metal as it was immortalized by the ancestor Candlemass.
DIM GRAY: Flown (2020)
ATMOSPHERIC ROCK - "Flown" proves to be a little nugget of rock art with its chiselled melodies, diversity and inventiveness. A perfectly successful first try by the Norwegians of Dim Gray.
