Raven is like an old friend, one of those we don't see often but like to meet again. We know in advance that it will not change and that we will find it with a certain pleasure to share a good slice of straight music in the heavy metal spirit of the 80s. This fourteenth album is called "Metal City". Next to the Gallagher brothers, the temple's enduring guardians, we find a new hitter, Mike Heller.
For this new album, the trio appears on the cover like in a comic book. The opus is composed of ten tracks for a duration equivalent to that of the records of the golden age of heavy metal and goes straight to the point without embellishment or dead time.
It offers some nice moments of very pleasing bravery. The opening trio of 'The Power', 'Top Of The Mountain' and 'Human Race' is a perfect compendium of Raven's art, furious metal carried by the raging voice of John Gallagher. The riffs are simple and direct, the rhythm intense, carried by a perfectly integrated drummer and we savor impeccable refrains intended to be taken again in concert. Mark Gallagher has fun with his guitar and shows that he has lost none of his speed of execution.
After this strong trio the disc does not lose any intensity. 'Metal City' and 'Motorheadin' see Raven take on hard rock horizons. The first seduces with its catchy vintage side, while the second is a perfect homage to Motörhead. Heavy speed also takes its toll with 'Battlescarred' and 'Not So Easy', which ignite the fire with energy and always deliver some brave moments on the guitar. The final track, 'When Worlds Collide', is the most epic and powerful track of the album, lasting more than six minutes. The title shows that the band can propose more sought-after things with a heavier side and always an excellent chorus.
With "Metal City", Raven shows Olympic form. The album is joyful from beginning to end and takes us back to a time when the NWOBHM reigned supreme. The veterans have a tough skin and this tenacity in the service of heavy metal is to be commended. - Official website
