Orkhys is a french band at a crossroads. Coming from symphonic metal, it punctuates its music with Celtic elements. After two years of hard work, it publishes his first EP "Awakening"... An awakening of the senses by which the band transmits its music, its influences and especially its cultural heritage. The music "[...] combines the legends of ancient times, the Celtic and folk sounds of our ancestors with powerful riffs [...]". Thus between folk atmospheres and heavy riffs almost thrash, the musicians did not want to impose themselves any barrier.
The songs are based on an energetic metal in the purest symphonic tradition of Nightwish or Visions of Atlantis: percussive riffs, fast rhythm and symphonic ornamentations ('Guardians of Our Lives'). The strength of the EP lies in this desire to be metal before being symphonic, as the energetic 'Rest of The Braves' or the percussive and direct 'The End Of Lies' proves.
Laurène's voice brings a special flavor to the songs and a spicy touch, even if it sometimes seems to be in the background. Her voice is charming and full of energy, both in her lyrical version ('Rest of The Braves') and in the metal version ('The End of Lies'). The vocals navigate between the magical intonations of Maggie Reilly (Mike Oldfield) and the warm, soft and fragile vocals of Ana Torroja (Mecano).
The musicians want to break away from the classical structures by bringing folk sounds worthy of Mike Oldfield, especially through the harp played by the singer, or multiple variations. The songs flirt with progressive metal and oscillate between the fluidity of catchy lyrical metal, the softness of symphonic passages and the fullness of country folk touches. Thus 'Guardians Of Our Lives' and 'Rest Of The Braves' offer rhythm changes, multiple riffs and varied vocals. Finally 'The End Of Lies' is more direct and immediate, relying on a more powerful, almost thrash score.
"Awakening" is a beautiful effort that seduces by its powerful metal music and the softness of its symphonic or folk ornamentation. This beautifully crafted EP is soft and refreshing as ice cream on a hot summer day. - Official website
