For many of the musical styles of our time, there is a coexistence of an innovative avant-garde and a need to feed off past sources. In the field of metal and progressive music, Norwegian artists and bands are key players in this mutation. On the progressive rock side, Wobbler is the guarantor of a golden age to which he pays homage in each of his albums.
It is admitted that the Norwegians reached their peak with "From Silence To Somewhere" and it is no surprise that they continue in the same direction with "Dwellers Of The Deep". The kinship between the two albums goes as far as the number of tracks and the presence of a folk breathing time ('Naiad Dreams') within three major tracks. Wobbler ends here with his longest piece while it opened "From Silence to Somewhere".
It is under the sign of urgency that the disc begins with a 'By The Banks' that spits out its organ notes without dead time. The energy displayed is obvious but well circumscribed so that the composition keeps its line and the variations runs smoothly. Wobbler allows a very fluid listening with the right amount of progressive material to galvanize the intensity of key moments and play on the contrasts between very dynamic passages and peaceful moments. The melodic aspects are sumptuous and the harmonic turns are all in all quite accessible and the shadow of Genesis and especially Yes hovers over this opening. 'Five Room' takes up the same codes to accentuate them.
When the delicate folkloric melody of 'Naiad Dreams' resounds, it is a feeling of calm that dominates. This welcome breathing leaves then room to the epic track, 'Merry Macabre', that is particularly demanding and coherent in its conceptual approach. This piece is a real challenge to dissect with its allures of immense maze of symphonic progressive rock. Built in a very modern spirit, the piece is adorned with vintage and classical sounds, borrows a rich lexicon of canterbury jazz, psychedelic and classic rock, and multiplies the dramatic chiaroscuro. But what lifts it to the top is the extra soul of the imposing mystical and spiritual dimension that punctuates its development.
With "Dwellers Of The Deep", Wobbler wins his gamble to make a sequel as successful as his superb "From Silence to Somewhere". To consider this band as a simple luxury tribute band would be a very reductive vision. This fifth album by Norwegians alone synthesizes the jubilation that lovers of progressive rock seek in this music in terms of character, melodies, sophisticated harmonies and twirling instrumental creations. - Official website
