Generally unloved object, the EP is often used only to diffuse tracks left on the shelf or to make fans wait between two real albums. This is not the case of Cult Of Luna for whom this narrow format has a particular role, that of completing the record that precedes it. This was the function reserved to "Vertikal II", excrescence of the record of the same name with which it forms a coherent whole. The same goes for "The Raging River" which completes the sound paradigm developed by "A Dawn To Fear" in 2019.

Block that fills five titles for a total duration of thirty minutes, "The Raging River" provides one of the most enjoyable compositions ever produced by the band, a robust and immersive 'Wave After Wave' with hypnotic slowness. But Cult Of Luna doesn't forget to surprise us, to experiment, as it does on 'Inside Of A Dream' offering to Mark Lanegan, the singer of Screaming Trees, the dreamed substrate for his powerfully emotional voice to the point of letting us believe that, during this short breath, we changed record so much his hosts appear in retreat, trying to capture the emaciated and melancholic universe of the American.

The emotion is moreover the key word of this opuscule. Rough and mineral, Johannes Persson vocals rumbles with the black force of despair ('Three Bridges'). However, the man never suffocates his companions, reminding us that Cult Of Luna has always been built around an ensemble, as illustrated by the way the ferruginous magma of the guitars is coupled to disembodied electronic layers on a background of percussion rolls ('What I Leave Behind').

"The Raging River" completes with the usual brilliance of its progenitors the opus "A Dawn To Fear", a full-fledged creation which sees Cult Of Luna working tirelessly on its art, severe and hypnotic.
