Apart from DGM and Eldritch, Italian progressive metal productions are rare these last years, at least those that reach our ears. It is therefore with a curiosity filled with hope that we discover 3 Dreams Never Dreamed. The band is not however at its first try because, even if its first album, "A Vanishing Day", went unnoticed in 2012, it still shows nearly fourteen years of career. For their second effort, the Milanese offer us a concept album, a marked universe (that of the circus), a flashy cover, an impeccable production, everything is there or almost. It remains to be seen if the music is up to the ambition displayed by the Lombards.

The answer is: not really. This album lacks the madness and the exuberance of the circus universe it is supposed to describe, a bit like if Fellini had had the crazy idea to direct an episode of Derrick. This is probably due to the polite and sometimes soporific progressive metal of 3 Dreams Never Dreamed, which is much more influenced by Doom (on the majority of the tracks) than by Dream Theater, in spite of vocal lines often close to James Labrie ('The Black Dressed Clown', 'The Poet').

Despite everything, this doom progressive color that dominates the whole album sometimes reserves good surprises. It is the case of the excellent 'The Dance', strongly inspired by Oceans Of Slumber or 'Another Vivid Detail' whose electro passages inevitably remind Lunatic Soul. Unfortunately, too many tracks are plagued by a lack of melodic inspiration and by redundant stylistic effects that are repeated from title to title, as if the band wanted to show that it has its own style, while it only uses the standards of doom (anorexic riffs, minimalist rhythms, lead guitar in support of the vocals).

Caught between a colorful universe and a dull music, entangled in a nonchalant doom and a too wise progressive metal, "Another Vivid Detail" is an album too thought, too reflexive, too storyboarded which fails to reveal the true personality of 3 Dreams Never Dreamed. In music as elsewhere, the best is often the enemy of the good.

OTHER REVIEWS
MASON HILL: Against The Wall (2021)
ALTERNATIVE ROCK - Mason Hill's first album is a model of alternative rock with an immediate catchiness but still a bit smooth to really stand out.
ALICE COOPER: Detroit Stories (2021)
HARD ROCK - Alice Cooper revisits his own mythology through his hometown. Despite some length, the album is a nice tribute to the Coop's sound.
