"If it was necessary to operate a classification of value within the discography of Yes for this first effort of Arc of Life, it would be to classify between the despairing "Open your Eyes" and the little convincing "Heaven & Earth"."

The discovery of Arc of Life, a new band that appeared in year 0 of the Covid pandemic, starts with its line-up: two permanent members of the current Yes (Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood), a brilliant quasi-titular behind the drums (Jay Schellen), a gifted progressive guitarist of the 2000s (Dave Kerzner) and an interim Yes guitarist with a less glittering career, but who we can easily imagine at the level of his acolytes. Something to be particularly bullish about!
'Life has a Way' opens the album on a background of snoring bass and very dynamic drums, with a rather inspired melody. We find here the very modern Yes, the one that produced in its time a certain "Talk". Alas, this good beginning turns out to be only a flash in the pan which will very quickly be extinguished as of the following track, whose very improbable melody will open the ball to a litany of titles all more insipid the ones than the others.
Unpleasant harmonies, noisy interventions, the impression that the instrumentalists do not always play the same score as the singer, and weird melodies that the excellence of the musicians does not manage to save, here is what you will find in this "Arc Of Life" Some examples among others? A very oddly mixed vocal and unbearable choruses on 'The Magic of it All', a 'Locked Down' with ridiculous keyboard sounds that just makes you want to run away and stop the massacre, or 'The End Game' which, by dint of waves of noises and contrary ebbs, ends up giving nausea.
To save all this, apart from the initial track, we are left with a single calibrated in the Asia way with a nice and repetitive melody on 'I Want to Know you Better' and a second in a similar style ('You Make it Real'). That's not much for such a line-up, and it's not necessarily what we would expect from them. If we had to make a value classification within Yes' discography for this first effort of Arc of Life, it would be to classify between the hopeless "Open your Eyes" and the unconvincing "Heaven & Earth". The fans will appreciate ... or not. For our part, we zap. - Official website
