With its last two albums, Cradle Of Filth has found a cheeky vitality. Gothic, romantic and deliciously perverse, these albums showed a band at the top of its shape, carried by a welded line-up. So to find Dani's band with a fourteenth act is an attractive idea. "Existence If Futile" has a cover with a wink to Jerome Bosch's hell, bringing a baroque side. The album evokes existentialism and the fear of the unknown, and the importance of enjoying life while you can, following the precepts of Aleister Crowley.
Cradle Of Filth divides its record into acts with symphonic interludes. Some of the tracks are very powerful ('Existential Terror', 'Black Smoke Curling From The Lips Of War', 'Suffer Our Dominion'). Dani rips out his vocal cords, the rhythm is fast and the guitar parts are intense. These songs have the gothic strength which makes the charm of the group through breaks all in nuances carried by the keyboard as well as by the vocals of Anabelle already completely integrated in the group.
Beside this raw power, Cradle Of Filth plays on the atmospheres. Carried by the keyboard, the gothic side is more present, the choruses are catchy and the whole is mixed perfectly with a power present in the riffs and soli and in the vocals of a Dani alternating screams and low vocals. The band shows an emotional strength full of a delicious dark romanticism. Anabelle's voice, full of charm, brings a melodic melancholy, supported by the keyboard and a Dani more storyteller than screamer ('Necromantic Fantasies', 'Discourse Between A Man And His Soul', 'How Many Tears To Nurture A Rose?) The riffs and solos give a heavy metal side with the feeling of listening to an Iron Maiden that went to the dark side of the force.
"Existence Is Futile" is another masterpiece to be credited to Cradle Of Filth. Intelligently constructed, the band confirms its status and its taste for a gothic and catchy extreme metal, confirming that decadence is indeed a virtue. - Official website
