Young french band, Autòmata officiates in an instrumental post rock at the borders of progressive and metal. The first album, soberly titled "Autòmata", recorded at Labsonic and La Tour Fine studios in the Paris region and financed by a crowdfunding campaign, was released in late January.

From 'Tanger', the listener understands that Autòmata is different from the plethora of standard post rock productions. Where most bands struggle to break out of the codes laid down by the pioneers, Autòmata paints a picture that is at the same time  melancholic and bright, deep and dark. The mix of crystalline acoustic and electric guitars elegantly illuminates the melancholic melody of an evolving and exciting opening track. On 'Church' more in conformity with the usual codes of the modern post rock which is not without reminding the Scots of Mogwaï, it is the metal aspects that the quartet puts forward by leaning on a heady melody, thread of the piece during its evolution since an electro introduction to the rougher metallic rises.

Not all instrumental music is necessarily inspiring or conducive to reverie. Autòmata's is. The very raw and dry drums of '3x3+5' plunge us into our innermost woes with its deep and dark atmosphere conducive to introspection. The solemnity of the intro of 'Verdik', its evolving construction, its syncopated rhythmic section in math rock mode and its metallic second part make it the most progressive track of "Autòmata". This is in contrast to 'Automate' and its metronomic rhythm, since the track that admirably closes the album shines with a luminous melancholy, soft tonal changes, hypnotic arpeggios, plaintive guitars and a touching musicality.

"Autòmata" is an exciting and immersive album. It is above all touching and addictive. Extremely well produced, it abounds in subtle arrangements and brilliant melodic and rhythmic ideas where riffs and melodies are the red thread of moving tracks with a very strong cinematographic power. We will only regret a rather short format of 37 minutes and 5 tracks, even if they take the time to develop. The amateurs of the genre will be filled, for the others, forget about the clichés which prevent you from turning to the post rock and listen to this "Autòmata", big surprise of this beginning of year.
