"Without reaching the quality of "Seventeen", "Out of This World" remains a very recommendable pop and progressive album!"

Three years ago, Kayak's "Seventeen" was an excellent surprise of accessible and varied progressive rock. After a "Live 2019", the band comes back with "Out of This World" with a formation missing only Andy Latimer.
No surprise with this new opus, Kayak still offers a menu based on prog (a little) and more mainstream tracks (a lot!) - a tendency present in all the albums of the Dutch band.
Without surprise the progressive tracks are the longest: the opener 'Out of This World' with its choral and symphonic tendency, the interesting 'Critical Mass' with its odd starting rhythm and its break with the soaring guitar, 'Writer's Tale' typically neo-progressive. The shorter tracks are clearly more formatted, some in the middle of the album are even dispensable ('As The Crow Flies', 'Distance to Your Heart', 'One by One'), and some tracks quote more or less known influences: Camel for 'Kaja' (Ton Scherpenzeel doesn't forget his closeness to Latimer), Toto in 'Traitor's Gate', Moon Safari for 'Waiting' and its joyful and choral side, and even Abba for the choir-string alliance of 'Under a Scar'!
The choice of alternating prog / mainstream in this album delivers a nice result, pleasant and immediately accessible. Without reaching the quality of "Seventeen" illuminated by the presence of Andy Latimer, "Out of This World" remains quite recommendable!
