Created in 2018, Burnt Umber is a French metal band mixing rock and metal with an alternative tendency. Their debut album, "Petroleum", is distributed by the French label Season Of Mist.

Going through the 14 tracks of the record, we quickly realize that efficiency is the key word of this first opus. With tracks ranging between 3 and 4 minutes, the quintet is in a powerful but always melodic register, led by the solid voice of Abby. The first track 'Three Of Sorrow' embodies perfectly this face of its music, just like 'Love Philter' and its sustained rhythmic, or 'The Hourglass' which closes the album as it should. This does not prevent the band from calming down the game on tracks like 'Epidemic', more restrained, or like the power ballad 'The Gap' and its epic allure. This register really brings a breath and a welcome lull in a record with a stronger sound overall.

If Abby's voice is certainly the main asset of the band, it can also be interpreted as a weakness. The vocal power of the young lady is not to be proved, nor her capacity to go up high in the trebles. But this tendency to push a little too much on her vocal cords to give an overpowering rendering tends to tire the ear of the listener in the long run (on 'Rainy Sunday' in particular). It is all the more regrettable that the singer is totally able to offer us some moments of respite like on the cover of 'Calling You' of Bagdad Café and its refined intro all in delicacy.

Burnt Umber sometimes tries some more muscular approaches as testifies the few shy interventions of guttural singing on the title 'Three Of Sorrow', perfectly compatible with the deployed ambiences when these become heavier. Musically, we also find some classic signatures of modern metal coming to spice up the whole, like the too short beginning of 'Rainy Sunday' and its percussive blast beat, or the big guitar rhythms supported by a slamming double pedal on 'X Chromosome'. Some incursions in a stronger metal register that we would like to see materialize later, especially since the technicality of the musicians allows them and that the few orchestral accents scattered here and there ('Stolen Pic') blend perfectly with this approach.

By diversifying its music and correcting some imperfections, Burnt Umber should have in hand the keys to its future, which we hope will be bright.

ROCK - Politically engaged and musically lazy, "Tin Foil Hat" is a reflection of Popa Chubby's lack of artistic inspiration.

HARD ROCK - "All The Right Noises" is a new must-have in Thunder's discography that asserts its domination over British hard rock.
