It has been a few years since Atreyu has been living on its assets. The American band struggles to keep a correct level with a boredom that has been showing for a long time. "In Our Wake" had shown a band a bit lost, applying a worn-out recipe and looking to reach a wider audience. The operation was not a triumph, and after an anniversary tour the band suffered a blow. Its singer Alex Varkatzas deserted the ranks after more than 20 years of presence. This would have been the end of many bands, but Atreyu got up quickly. Brandon Saller left his drums to take over the clean vocals full time and bassist Marc McKnigt took over the screaming vocals. Baptize" has the heavy task of relaunching the band and proving that it has a future in this configuration.

Well filled with tracks, the album is nevertheless quite short, Atreyu having had the good idea to propose short tracks, rarely over three minutes. A lot of tracks find a certain hargue and are listened with interest, offering a nice balance between power and melody ('Baptize', 'Weed', 'Broken Again', 'Oblivion'). Brandon's clear vocals are powerful and avoid the honeyed side. On the other side, Marc screams in good complementarity, finding a typical metalcore with a catchy side in some choruses and a nice energy with riffs and heavy soli well felt. In the good surprises are also 'Untouchable' with Jacoby of Papa Roach as a guest for a neo metal result tinged with rap.

But the armour has its flaws. 'Dead Weight' and 'Sabotage Me' are in a very commercial vein with the guitars in the background and a vocals destined to the radio. Finally, 'Stay' sounds like a pop song with an obvious Muse side, but the result is basic and cruelly lacks soul.

Alex's departure could be scary but Atreyu managed it perfectly. "Baptize" doesn't revolutionize the genre but it allows the band to raise its head. It's a good news, and even if everything is not perfect, we can think that the band still has a future and things to say.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME: Colors Ii (2021)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - With "Colors II", Between The Buried And Me pays more than a tribute to its elder "Colors" and definitively establishes its status as a major band of the extreme progressive scene.
