The Children Of Bodom adventure came to an end on December 15, 2019. The Finnish band exploded with the departure of Janne Wirman, Jaska Raatikainen and Henkka Seppälä. Owning rights to the band's name, the latter could not allow Alexi Laiho and Daniel Freyberg to continue under the name Children Of Bodom. This did not discourage the two men who quickly got back on their feet with a new band, Bodom After Midnight, title taken from the second song of "Follow The Reaper".
The two companions went to find Waltteri Väyrynen as drummer and Mitja Toivonen on bass with in complement a keyboard for the concerts. The adventure was announced beautiful but it did not last. The band, blocked by the pandemic, gave only three concerts and was stopped by the death of Laiho at the very end of 2020. From this very short adventure, a trace remains, a testament called "Paint The Sky With Blood", a three track EP born from the musicians' will to pay tribute to their singer and guitarist.
Listening to the tracks it is hard to say that the man was weakened. 'Paint The Sky With Blood' and 'Payback's Bitch' are bombs cut in a remarkable melodic death black metal, carried by the sharp voice of Laiho. The rhythm is intense, Laiho screams his rage and shows a conviction which gives the shiver. We find the melodic, powerful and technical tone which made the strength of Children Of Bodom through riffs and ruffling soli. The keyboard makes its place, all this is delightful and finds the energy and the freshness of the beginnings of Laiho. The cover of 'Where Dead Angels' by Dissection is a nice moment of grace that pays a nice tribute to the most fascinating black metal band.
"Paint The Sky With Blood" is a superb testament that pays a perfect tribute to Alexi Laiho. Bodom After Midnight will have been quite ephemeral but it allows to notice that the guitarist singer remained in perfect artistic shape. It concludes a career of quality, the man left but his music remains, and it will continue to mark many generations of musicians. - Official website
