Since the reformation in 2007, the veterans of Artillery have not been idle. The Danes, led by the unmovable Michael Stützer, have released five albums, all of which are in the thrash genre of which they are part of the founders. Despite certain qualities, Artillery has never known the success of its famous American or European colleagues but it has always been able to offer solid albums.

Shaken by the loss in 2019 of Michael's brother Morten, the band is back with "X", in the form of a tribute to the one who was of all the albums. Without his brother at his side, Michael relied on his new guitarist, Kræn Meier, to write the album. Since the arrival of Michael Dahl on vocals, Artillery evolves between thrash and heavy metal, the singer showing an interesting versatility.

This makes "X" a varied record, often explosive but melodic in the spirit of Megadeth or Annihilator. 'The Devils Symphony', 'Turn Up The Rage', 'Silver Cross', 'In Your Mind' and 'Mors Ontologica' show a good balance. The power is carried by a sustained rhythm in the drums and typical thrash riffs. The melody is invited through effective choruses carried by a Michael with pleasant vocals and by high quality solos, purely heavy metal.

On the other hand, Artillery varies the tone with strong and catchy songs. 'In Thrash We Trust' and 'Force Of Indifference' speed up and get closer to the spirit of Testament for an explosive result. 'The Ghost Of Me' offers a nice power ballad close to the Scorpions of the 70s, expressing a nice feeling and a strong emotional side and delivering an excellent old school heavy solo.

With "X", Artillery signs a very nice record which sees them mixing genres with ease, constituting a nice tribute from Michael to his brother. The band continues its road in a nice way and we wish them to do it for a long time, as a perfect craftsman of the metallic cause.
