It's been thirty years since the Swedes of At The Gates defined the rules of melodic death metal. From a thunderous beginning to a successful comeback, the band has never faltered. Their last two albums have allowed them to become the undisputed boss again. Their new offering is called "The Nightmare Of Being" and we expect it to scotch us in the same way as its predecessors.

This new opus is a concept on the philosophy of pessimism around the writings of Thomas Ligotti, with themes close to Lovecraft. With a splendid illustration that plunges the listener deep into the darkness, we have a very worked record, especially on the atmospheres, in perfect adequacy with the theme.

'Spectre Of Extinction' finds the mix of power and melody through burning riffs and fast solos with a Thomas Lindberg singing like a raw skinned man. But then, the tone changes. Within the seemingly classic tracks lie subtleties; At The Gates steps out of its comfort zone and goes further in the research of emotions. On 'The Paradox', piano touches are heard, discreet and bringing a certain atmosphere. On 'Touched By The White Hands Of Death', 'Cult Of Salvation' and 'The Abstract Enthroned', calm and dark passages, keyboard breaks and clear vocals take the songs to another dimension.

There is even more! On several tracks At The Gates dares and surprises. 'Garden Of Cyrus' is tinged with a very progressive airy spirit with a calm vocal full of charm. The touch of saxophone brings an atmosphere close to King Crimson. 'Cosmic Pessimism' and 'The Fall Into Time' are in the same spirit. The melodic death is more present but the tone is just as progressive, which is felt through long instrumental parts with a symphonic touch and clear vocals tinged with melancholy. Finally 'The Nightmare Of Being', essentially calm and airy, has a melancholic side that touches the soul in adequacy with the pessimistic theme developed on the disc.

With "The Nightmare Of Being", At The Gates  avoids a repetition that we feared with a powerful, dark and loaded record of a great melodic force. The Swedish group strikes a great blow with an impressive writing maturity.
