Goad is one of those indefatigable bands that tirelessly resurface. Created in 1974 by Maurilio Rossi, the band offers with "La Belle Dame" its eleventh album, taking its concept from a ballad of the English poet John Keats, 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci', whose melancholic imagination seems made for a band that moves most often in a dark and tortured spleen.
Those who are familiar with Goad's universe know that the atmosphere is rarely funny, and those who are less so will not take long to notice. The band is often compared to Van der Graaf Generator (who was also inspired by this ballad for 'When She Comes' from "World Record") for its darkness and to King Crimson for its angular melodies.
Prestigious references that Goad has no intention of betraying. "La Belle Dame" contains its share of compositions with not very obvious melodic lines and with gothic turns releasing a strangeness which makes its charm. A charm which is not born from a tune giving the desire to hum but more from the melancholic atmosphere, sometimes dreamlike ('Magic Stairway') that the album gives off in its whole.
Between intriguing melodies and rich and tormented instrumental parts, each track has something to interest the listener. But the album is a bit too homogeneous, due to the use of the same codes: a slow tempo from one end to the other, a chaotic rhythm resulting from the use of odd bars and driven by a drum and bass mixed a bit too much in front, and a very particular omnipresent voice (the kind of voice you either adhere to or reject), hesitating between spoken language and melodic vocals. All this creates a lack of contrasts and it is difficult to distinguish the tracks from each other.
Nevertheless, we must salute the careful, delicate, complex work that emerges from "La Belle Dame". If the somewhat linear character that emerges from it prevents it from reaching the status of an imperishable album, it is nevertheless pleasant to listen to for all those who are not afraid of a little originality. - Official website
