Two years after "Universe", Edge Of Paradise is back with its fourth album entitled "The Unknown". The Americans had moved away from their classic melodic metal to impose some modern and electronic sounds. The line-up here has lost three of its original members: the bassist, the drummer and one of the two guitarists. The six-string is only held by Dave Bates. Did the band of Margarita Monet, the charming Russian-born singer-pianist of the combo, follow the inclinations perceived on "Universe", or did it go back on the tracks of its past albums?
Edge Of Paradise chose to modernize its melodic metal and to continue on the path of the electro-industrial, in a mixture between Amaranthe and Evanescence, with some touches of Within Temptation and Beyond The Black: monolithic riffs, short solos, symphonic keyboards, Lyric vocals, electro sounds in profusion, epic and cinematic ambiences and addictive melodies with a dynamic pop tendency.
The ten tracks offered here are as many hits in power. Mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen who is in charge of Amaranthe - no surprise - they all make you want to have fun on the dancefloor with an air guitar in your hand. As far as dancing is concerned, Margarita, a ballerina by passion, shows the example on the numerous videos that are popping up on the Net. Her vocal range is truly hallucinating, her aggressive and high vocals literally pierce the listener. Deeply involved in the stories she tells - touching the universe, technologies and the digital world - she is the cornerstone of the combo. No concept album here, but a guiding idea that sticks with the electro-industrial side of the musical style, an idea that is clearly displayed in the numerous clips proposed by the band. It's difficult to highlight one track rather than another here, they are conceptually (rhythm, structure, atmosphere...) not far from each other. However 'Digital Paradise', 'Tidal Wave', the eponymous title and 'False Idols' could be the best pieces of the opus.
It is essential here to be refractory neither to the high female voices, nor to the electronic and industrial ambiences, nor to the pop-metal/dance-metal. It is perfectly conceivable that this album will receive a bad welcome from the metal fans who do not support the association of these genres to their beloved music. In the style now chosen by Edge Of Paradise, it remains that this product is perfectly successful. - Official website
