Born of Osiris is an American deathcore band that evolved into a metalcore with progressive touches. It produced five albums mostly well received, critics comparing them to The Faceless, Periphery or Veil Of Maya. But it also sometimes divided with "Tomorrow We Die ∆live" with too many arrangements and programming or with "The Simulation" which proposed proven recipes associated with a mainstream orientation. Will the new album "Angel or Alien" be in the same vein?
This new opus has a lot of qualities that are skillfully sprinkled. It has a great power and a very positive communicative energy from its first notes to its last breath. The guitar riffs are percussive and sharp, sometimes at the limit of thrash ('White Nile'), going back to deathcore ('Angel or Alien') or flirting with a djent aspiration ('Truth and Denial'). The melodic dressing brings a supplement of soul in any simplicity or by the means of a hoarse voice seconded by a beautiful clear voice. The electro tints integrate naturally to the songs and the guitars are effective ('Threat of Your Presence', 'In For The Kill').
To affirm its progressive side, the numerous changes of tempo bring breaths, make unite the hot and the cold through leaded riffs and icy keyboards. These last ones color the tracks of varied nuances with artificial sounds. This desire to push the music further and to make it progress is obvious on 'Shadowmourne' when a sensual saxophone warms up the atmosphere or when, in the manner of mathcore, throbbing arpeggios annihilate any will to resist. The band seems to reach its goal, being melodic, simple and direct before being brutal.
Born Of Osiris is neither an angel nor an alien, but a nice devil whose songs may not twist your guts enough. Certainly "Angel Or Alien" offers a very melodic, very energetic, superbly played post-metalcore, with progressive touches, but it sometimes lacks bite and animality. - Official website
