"Wooden Box" had been one of the big melodic slaps of the year 2020. One year later, Tuple is back with a new opus entitled "Welcome To Hell" for which he has surrounded himself with the same team apart from some details. Only the keyboard player Pate Kivinen is no longer part of the band, while the list of guests is limited this time to Erkka Korhonen, Janne Tolsa and Tonny Kakko (Sonata Arctica). It is also worth noting the presence of Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast) for a duet on the track 'Survive'. This continuity in the line-up is also translated at the level of the musical scheme, for the biggest happiness of all those whom the previous album had enthralled.
If it is a question here of a new concept linking the titles around a journey to Aspen (Colorado) in the XVIIIth century, we must admit that this one has nothing obvious when we listen to the lyrics. It is all the less so when Britney Spears' 'Baby One More Time' is named in the eponymous title that opens the festivities. On the other hand, what strikes immediately is the efficiency of a formula that had already made its proof last year. The melodies are all catchy, the choruses are unbeatable and special attention has been paid to the guitar solos. Works of Riitis and Erkka Korhonen on five tracks, they come to brighten up small melodic bombs which had already triggered an unrestrained enthusiasm, in particular for those having known the golden age of the 80s. Indeed, the discreet shadow of Danger Danger is hovering on 'Stay' while those of Journey and Foreigner are haunting 'Not Enough To Love Me'. Finally, it is impossible not to guess a slight wink the eye of Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On A Prayer' on 'Survive'.
Always endowed with an outstanding production, typical of Scandinavian works, combining power and strength, "Welcome To Hell" transports the listener between Los Angeles and Helsinki. Just like its predecessor, it alternates tempi by passing from a melodic hard rock punchy and catchy ('Welcome To Hell', '1-2-3-4-Go!', 'Hiding In Plain', 'Lies Grow Lies') to mesmerizing but still energetic mid-tempi ('Hold On To Me', 'So Damn Cruel'). Pride' reminds us of Lordi's compatriots on its rhymed and heady chorus a la 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' and 'Silver' closes the album in a cinematic atmosphere lasting more than seven minutes, as 'Pretty Much Perfect' had done the year before. The rhythm and the atmospheres vary but the intensity remains the same, catching the attention from the beginning to the end.
Just like "Wooden Box", "Welcome To Hell" doesn't revolutionize the genre in depth but Tuple succeeds once again in triggering exhilaration with a journey through time that doesn't sound melancholy or mothballs. Proof of the talent that had dazzled us on its predecessor, this opus should take its place in our playlists to stay there at least during the whole summer period.
