It took five years of patience for Iron Maiden to release a new album. The Legacy tour was stretched out and the pandemic passed by. Seventeenth album of the British legend, "Senjutsu" was conceived in Paris with Kevin Shirley in 2019 and then remained locked up for two years in Steve Harris' safe. A tribute to Japan, the record is in line with its predecessor with a sleek cover featuring Eddie in samurai garb.
"Senjutsu" is dense but perfectly arranged with a clever split into two discs. From the beginning, the listener is drawn into a cinematographic, epic and melancholic story. Bruce Dickinson is theatrical and the trio of guitarists are in total symbiosis with remarkable solos, Dave Murray showing his class while Adrian Smith impresses with his touch and a beautiful keyboard line. Carried by a folk and blues melody, 'Writing On The Wall' carry on the listener with the same storytelling edge on a high-flying chorus. The trio riffs and solos in a heavy whirlwind. With 'Time Machine', Iron Maiden becomes progressive, melancholic and airy. Carried by a chorus that sticks the shiver, the title flies to the top with a Gers at his best on a solo in the spirit of what he proposed on 'Dreams Of Mirrors'.
By signing the final trilogy, Steve Harris satisfies the fans of epic tracks with long instrumental parts. 'Death Of The Celts' is very close to 'Blood Brothers' and 'The Clansman'. Carried by a long acoustic intro with a well highlighted bass, it is a celtic wonder that makes you want to raise your fist. 'The Parchment' finds the tones of 'The Nomad' with an oriental side. The title bluffs by its melodic force. It is essentially calm, the whole carried by a Bruce at the top of his art in symbiosis with the music. 'Hell On Earth' is typical of the Harris style of recent years. It starts out acoustic, not far from the spirit of "The X Factor", and then evolves with heavy and airy solos, all carried by a Bruce in storytelling mode. 'Stratego' and 'Days Of Future Past' air the record and Smith and Dickinson sign with 'Darkest Hour' a track tinged with neo-classic.
Of course, some people will miss the "speed metal" days of Iron Maiden. But one can only bow to the talent of the sextet for a progressive, melodic and grandiloquent heavy. Un premier CD qui démarre de manière un peu poussive, le temps de deux premiers titres plutôt passables, avant que le groupe ne retrouve son allant et ses références.
Le deuxième CD est un vrai bonheur de heavy progressif dans lequel Maiden fait du Maiden ... pas original mais très plaisant.

Iron Maiden nous fait du Iron Maiden!!!! Du bon Heavy Metal Progressif comme on l'aime. Rien à redire à part que le légendaire groupe britannique nous offre une nouvelle fois une petite merveille.
Chapeau quand même pour sortir des pépites pareilles après près de 40 ans de longévité!!!

Jamais réussi à accrocher à Maiden qu'elles que soient les périodes. Ce groupe m'a toujours fait penser à certains journalistes qui impressionnent par leur style d'écriture, voire de politiciens qui parlent excessivement bien. C'est grandiloquent, ça impressionne mais in fine on n'en retient pas grand chose. Le propos est dilué dans la masse d'informations.

C'est un bon album c'est certain, mais je ne suis pas aussi enthousiaste que vous. Le qualificatif qui me vient au bout de chaque écoute c'est poussif. Y a de bonnes idées mais elles sont répétées à outrance. Le côté prog que j'avais adoré sur A matter of life and death, est devenu un gimmick c'est dommage. Enfin ça manque de changement de rythme, beaucoup trop de Mid Tempo.
A réécouter en prenant le recul, mais en 2021, après avoir passé 2 semaines à écouter en boucle Colors II de BTBAM, qui n'est pas du Heavy c'est vrai mais qui est tellement prog, et en comparaisons avec le reste de la disco il m'est difficile de lui donner une meilleure note que les classiques.

Assez d'accord avec la critique de Noise : il y a du Brave New World dans ce Senjutsu c'est ce qui m'a réconcilié avec la vierge de fer, alors que je m'étais endormi entre deux chapitres du Book of Souls ! Pour faire court : sur le CD 1 je garde The Writing on the wall, le reste est oubliable et hormis le longuet Hell on Earth ,les titres du CD 2 risquent de devenir des standards du groupe, ce qui module un peu ma note... sont pas foutus les vieux !!!
