While France persists in disdaining him, Jimmy Barnes has just released his 19th album, which took the opportunity to become his 13th number one in Australia, beating U2 and Madonna. While "My Criminal Record" (2019) was often angry, the newcomer is a family work by the number of its participants, but also by the theme of most of its songs. Wife, children, grandchildren ... all mobilized around the Australian boss for an opus conceived during the period of confinement and translating the melancholy caused by this troubled period and highlighting the importance of family relationships and friends.
A bit like Bruce Springsteen on "Letter To You", Jimmy Barnes takes the time to look back on his life and on the trials he went through. The eponymous title that opens this collection with an infectious energy and a catchy chorus reminds us of his American counterpart. Jimmy's flesh and blood are his children, and he has given them everything, the best and the worst of which he apologizes, even if he has always done his best. The first part of the album works in a similar register ('Around In Circles'), leaning a little more towards a folk-rock to which the artist adds some notes of bagpipes ('I'm Coming Home'). After all, he never denied his Scottish origins and it is not at 65 years old that he will start. Typical of the Australian pub-rock, to which Jimmy Barnes largely contributed to give its letters of nobility, 'Gateway To Your Heart' is also unstoppable and benefits from a nice guitar solo offered by a certain Mark Lizotte, better known under the name of Johnny Diesel and who co-wrote several titles of the album.
The second part of this "Flesh & Blood" takes the side of the softness and the melancholy by stringing together five calm and moving tracks. With some country touches, 'Til The Next Time' shows delicacy and depth by dealing with the nocturnal anguish that can seize the author, and that his wife soothes by her simple presence. 'I Move Slow' is also touching as it deals with the passing of time with his children Elly-May and Jackie. To note that this last one, drummer within Rose Tattoo, shows here a remarkable delicacy. As for 'Love Hurts' interpreted with his wife Jane, it is also poignant, evoking an episode of their common life during which Jimmy decided to put everything on the table, the best and the worst, in order to allow them to start again on healthy bases. All these titles, although remaining in a calmed register, compensate their softness by an interpretation at the same time right and deep, which is not surprising when one knows the talent of the master of the places.
Less immediate than its predecessor and showing a relatively unusual softness for its author, "Flesh & Blood" is nevertheless a new success for Jimmy Barnes. He proves here the immensity of his talent as an interpreter and confirms that he is the boss of an Australian rock for which the intensity can be found as well in the depth of his interpretation as in the power of his instruments. We have no illusions about the echo that this opus will meet in France, but this should not prevent you from giving it the attention it deserves. - Official website
