Esquys is a little girl and this record that bears her name tells her story. This is what the creator of the work, Sébastien Normand, tells us as a preamble. Because it is not only about music here, but about finding one's way in a dreamlike and fascinating universe, where the world becomes both bigger and more intimate. Multi-instrumentalist, the former guitarist of Polarys and bassist of Nepenthys opens the door of his own cinema with a lot of folk music mixed with symphonic metal.
Between charming hurdy-gurdy, silky strings and aggressive distortions, the instrumentals draw the landscape, eaten by the cold but depicted with ardor and passion, while the songs welcome each time a new storyteller, reinforcing a little more the fantastic aspect through their very characteristic timbres.
The Mexican Anna Fiori opens the ball on 'Open Your Eyes' for limpid flights mixed with growl, the Argentinian soprano Ranthiel reveals her operatic accents on 'Ghosts', the ex-singer of the Swiss band Eluveitie Anna Murphy follows with a funereal beauty 'Shadows' followed by the American Jen Janet for the ballad 'Your Smile' before the Dutch Micky Huijsmans closes the album with an unexpected but totally appropriate cover of Madonna's 'Frozen'.
Add the participation of Swedish Mattias "Freak Kitchen" Eklundh as a noisy six-string druid, and the story of this little girl in a fantasy world turns out to be a beautiful mirror of our current world, where barriers and borders have fallen in favor of one and only one reason.
