Impressive. This is the first word that comes to mind when listening to The Omnific's first album, "Escapades". Noticed for a few years now after the releases of their two EPs, "Sonorous" and "Kismet", the Australian trio surprises us with this "Escapades" which will delight all the open minds, curious and in search of originality.
What The Omnific manages to do here was far from being a foregone conclusion. Think about it, a trio that composes entirely instrumental tracks with only two basses and one drum is almost condemned in advance to commercial and artistic suicide. And yet, it works very well. So well, in fact, that the three musicians blow away all preconceived ideas from the very first bars of the opening track, 'Antecedent', on which a third bass player, Clay Gober from Polyphia, is invited. This association does not owe anything to chance since The Omnific is perfectly in line with the modern movement of these young musicians who are fed with hypnotic polyrhythms, the fusion of musical genres and technical djent.
Of course, technique is the subject of "Escapades". The two bassists, Matthew Fackrell and Toby Peterson-Stewart, compete with each other with more complex plans and show how the bass can be cut for the groove ('Scurryfunge', 'Posterity'), but it can also be a magnificent melodic instrument (the superb arpeggios of 'Fountainhead', the leads of 'Wax & Wane').
So of course, the music of The Omnific is first and foremost a rhythmic music, supported by the stunning work of Jerome Lematua on drums. But the trio has the intelligence to incorporate to its compositions keyboards judiciously used to support the melodies (the excellent 'Matai') and sometimes to break with the omnipresent groove of the titles (the piano of 'The Labyrinth Chronicles' and 'Scurryfunge').
With "Escapades", The Omnific is the bassist version of Animals As Leaders. Just as technical and groovy, the trio's music has the same hypnotic power as that of their American elders. But what is most fascinating is the incredible musicality that transpires from each track. With only two basses, a drum kit and a few keyboards, the Australians manage to keep your attention for almost 50 minutes by drawing convoluted and original soundscapes. - Official website
